type='text'>Trickle Up -

This is more of a notion. With some time, I hope to form it into a concept, then maybe get some money to turn it into an idea.

I wanted to put down in text this idea of trickle up viewership. Jen Stark's Paper Art has now reached 76,000 views, thanks largely to BoingBoing.net, a site that clearly gets mad traffic. The most interesting thing about Jen's viewership graph is that each spike is larger than the one that came before it. The first spike came from Jen's own website, which added a healthy 1500 views in a weekend. Then came www.cpluv.com, a design site that doubled the spike with more than 3K views. CPLUV brought it to the attention of the Wooster Collective, which embraced the video and it shot up 5K in a single day. Add to that the traffic still flowing from CPLUV and it took a while for that to die down. Then came 2modern.blog.com with a healthy 4K spike, roughly equivalent to what came before. Then all was quiet until last week BoingBoing.net placed the video front and center and we had 11k views in a matter of hours. What strikes me most is that the circulation of the video increases as time goes by - it starts in a local market and then gains momentum and attention, passing through to larger and larger audiences. It's being handed up the ladder - gaining tens of thousands of views along the way. This is a pattern worth studying.

It's also worth noting that in a typical TV broadcast, this segment may have only reached 15,000 people at once. Online, Jen's reach is far greater than on our regional TV. Granted its an evergreen video, but balance that observation with this: those who saw it on TV did so without knowing what was coming up. Those who saw it online knew before hand and were genuinely curious.

New Video on Panic Bomber!

Our new video on Panic Bomber, Live from the Vagabond!

The Taste of Progress!

First, an update on Jen Stark - she's nearing 45,000 views and is far and away our most watched video. Interestingly, she did this entirely through embeds. 96% of her views come from off site. This runs contrary to YouTube as a whole but isn't really surprising. Common sense says that the people interested in cat videos and comedy go to YouTube but the people interested in niche videos about art and design go to art and design websites. Small wonder that Jen is out performing the rest of our videos - few of them have found a niche outside of YouTube, with the exception of Live in Color Dancers Live Their Dreams (our second most watched video with 10,000+ views). The answer to this problem of course, is seeding the videos to the sites that are most likely to serve our audiences. That's what we call phase two.

In other news, I've been reading Guy Kawasaki's excellent book "the art of the start" and I've learned a thing or two. Here, for the first time in print, is One Eight Five's new mantra: tell Miami stories.

Quick Note, to be revised later.

I need to read this about content producers. Also, Jen Stark just exploded over the last two days, getting another 10,000 views, bringing her total to just about 30,000. It turns out the segment was picked up by the Wooster Collective and they apparently get mad traffic. It's spread from there, finding its way to other prominent sites like Good Magazine and elsewhere. Amazingly, this spike completely overtakes the initial bump we got when Jen put us front and center on her own website. In a matter of hours, this video went from being the second most watched on ArtStreet Miami (down by about 500 views) to the most watched by more than 6,000 views. That's nearly a 60% increase of views in only 30 hours.

Granted, it's still only a drop in the bucket on the full YouTube scale but it's huge relative to our previous efforts. Art Basel as landed in Miami and this weekend promises to be busy. Tonight we'll start filming Friday's at the Vagabond at the behest of Sweat Records, bringing you video of the best of Miami's indie music.

Next week we start production on our Segment for the Borscht Project, "Art/Not Art" written by Matt Gajewski. Then suddenly, it's Christmas and the festival is underway.

Maybe most exciting of all, Borscht will be screening Medicine For Melancholy on the second night of the festival, only a few weeks after it was nominated for 3 Independent Spirit Awards. Congrats to Barry, Justin and Cherie (Also James, Adela and Nat) - doing FSU Film School proud.

Also, Andrew's ArtStreet segment on Jen Stark is on its way to becoming WLRN's most watched online video. If you haven't seen it yet, check it out on this very website/blog or go to our YouTube channel and watch it there. (It's embeded here once, people. I won't do it twice. Also, I'm trying to boost our channel views.)

Also, I found this report on Website Video SEO. It's gold.

The best thing ever?!

Send your own ElfYourself eCards

Back in the Old MIA

I've made it back to Miami. San Francisco was amazing, as usual, and it was hard to leave. While I was there, I helped out with the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation YouTube site and had all around great time.

Things really are cooking up here in Miami and I'm looking forward to getting busy. December first I'll start pre-production on my film for the Borscht Film Festival, which is coming up soon, right along side Art Basel, which is too far ahead for me to really think about just yet.

Also, I found this online earlier, thought it was interesting. More when I know it.

Jen Stark's Eye Popping Paper Sculptures

"Paper Constructs," Andrew's newest ArtStreet segment, airs this month on WLRN-TV. It was supposed to be more business than pleasure but a few things fell through and I've found myself with more time on my hands than I expected.

Fortunately, it's a wonderful city to be in with time on your hands and I'm making use of it. Last night, I saw Old Crow Medicine Show play at the Filmore. It was a rousing hootenanny, one for the books. Before that I had lunch at Cha-Ya's, which was the most delicious bit of Vegan Japanese food I've had since the last time I ate there in July.

Social meetings the rest of the week and college visits to Stanford's GSB and the Haas School of Business at Berkeley, followed by the real reason for the trip - NewTeeVee Live! on Thursday. Gasp!

Meanwhile, ArtStreet Miami is running a beta site and back home in Miami things seem to be cooking up something fierce. I'm happy to be here but I can't wait to get back. There's work to be done.
